Diptychs

These video diptychs emerged out of both curiosity and resistance. Like many artists, I often use periods between major projects to experiment and investigate ideas freely through playful studio practices. Diptychs invite comparison, contradiction, and dialogue, opening space for multilayered interpretation. Here, I sift through myriad collected video fragments on my hard drive, making pairings that may serve as deliberate social commentary or simply fleeting, spontaneous creative thoughts. This, and more, can all be explored within the space of studio play.

At the same time, I’ve been thinking about the instability of the current art world. The landscape is shifting— major galleries are closing, sales are slowing, and the traditional structures feel less certain than they once did. Hoping to reach broader audiences outside fragile conventional systems, especially now when so much of the conversation has moved online, I initiated this experimental work. With self-imposed constraints to foster creativity within the unfriendly visual space of social media, these works are no longer than 20 seconds to suit shorter attention spans. The series of 50 employ split square compositions as a nod to the rigid Instagram format that was forced upon creatives at the platform’s inception. I must complete them with no more than 30 minutes of editing.
